Designing Your Dental Plan

If your smile is in need of improvement either cosmetically or functionally, there is a correct

procedure for you! You may be asking, “what is the difference between veneers, dental

implants, and crowns?” Here is a quick guide to these common dental procedures.

Veneers

If you are looking to beautify your smile or correct damaged or imperfect teeth, then dental

veneers may be the answer. Veneers can improve a number of cosmetic imperfections.

After removing part of your enamel, ultra-thin porcelain or composite veneers are

affixed to the front surface of your teeth, improving the look of your smile. Veneers are not used to cover an entire tooth, but usually placed only on visible teeth. Many patients opt to get a set of veneers for a perfect, balanced smile. Porcelain veneers can last up to 10-15 years without needing to be replaced, ensuring a long-lasting and beautiful smile!

Dental Crowns

Dental crowns are used for a variety of reasons, such as strengthening a tooth after a significant dental procedure such as a root canal or large filling, Crowns are also used or to cover and reinforce broken, misshapen, or otherwise damaged teeth. Dr. Kiai and his team at Westwood Dental Esthetics use porcelain for their dental crowns; porcelain is not only very strong, but also provides a perfectly natural look, resembling your natural teeth. Whereas veneers are attached only to the front of a tooth, and used only for cosmetic purposes, a crown covers an entire tooth, fully encasing the root and the remaining tooth.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are used to replace teeth that are missing or have been extracted. The anchor for the implant is placed into the jawbone and acts as an artificial root. Once the jawbone has fused with the artificial root a crown will be screwed into the implant site.

In some cases, a bone graft may be necessary if the jawbone needs to be strengthened to

support the implant. Dental implants are an excellent cosmetic solution that can guarantee

long-term preservation of your tooth. Implants provide stability and act as a natural tooth

would. With proper care, an implant can last a lifetime.
