It is essential to keep your whole body, including your teeth and mouth, in top condition while waiting for your little one to arrive.

Many people are surprised to learn that pregnant women are even more susceptible to common oral issues. The American Dental Association claims that pregnant women are at an increased risk for gingivitis, tooth decay, and even an overgrowth of oral tissues.

  • Gingivitis – During pregnancy, an increase in the hormone progesterone can cause gingivitis (gum inflammation), leading to tender, swollen, bleeding gums. It is vital to continue to brush twice daily and floss to prevent a build-up of plaque and bacteria. At the first sign of bleeding gums, use a sea salt solution to reduce inflammation and heal your gums. Dilute one half teaspoon of sea salt in one cup of warm water, swish it around in your mouth a few times and spit it out.
  • Tooth decay – Pregnant women are more prone to tooth decay for a variety of reasons. If you are experiencing morning sickness, you may be foregoing a healthy diet. Morning sickness can also cause an increase in stomach acid, which can be detrimental to your enamel. Be sure to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables and lean protein, and keep up your brushing and flossing routine.
  • Visits to the dentist – Pregnancy is not the time to avoid visiting the dentist. There’s no need to worry that regular dental procedures are harmful to your growing baby. If you need a filling or extraction, be assured that any numbing medications used are safe for you and your baby. Dental x-rays are safe, too. Radiation from dental x-rays is very low, and your abdomen will be protected with a leaded apron.

The CDC notes that women who have a lot of cavity-causing bacteria during pregnancy and after delivery have an increased risk of transmitting these bacteria to their infant’s mouth.
